Society of Radical Readers Book Study

Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Elkhart 1732 Garden Street, Elkhart, Indiana, United States

For May, the Radical Readers will examine Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, which contains many themes and subjects near and dear to UUs. The book, published in 1993, describes a possible future in the United States, beginning in 2024. It is eerily prophetic, even if hyperbolic and should lead to some fascinating conversation about how UUs would handle some of the situations the characters find themselves in.

Science and Society: Dawn of Humanity

UUFE Gathering Place 1732 Garden Street, Elkhart, IN, United States

In May the Science and Society group will view the Nova/National Geographic Society special Dawn of Humanity.  This program presents an important set of discoveries of ancient fossils of our human ancestors. Deep in a South African cave, a team of experts has shared their discovery of a wealth of fossils which fills a crucial gap in the record of our origins and may span the transition between the ape-like australopithecines (such as the famous Lucy) and the earliest members of the human family. At the center of the discovery is paleoanthropologist Lee Berger, a character brimming with enthusiasm and opinions. Since this is a two-hour long presentation, we will view it in two one-hour sessions as follows. Due to scheduling hiccups in May we will schedule part one of this Science and Society presentation for Tuesday May 16th at 2 PM and the second session for Tuesday May 30th at 2 PM in the Gathering place.
