For May, the Radical Readers will examine Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower, which contains many themes and subjects near and dear to UUs. The book, published in 1993, describes a possible future in the United States, beginning in 2024. It is eerily prophetic, even if hyperbolic and should lead to some fascinating conversation about how UUs would handle some of the situations the characters find themselves in.

Join the group in their discussion of the Octavia Butler's "Parable of the Talents." This book is the second of a series that started with Parable of the Sower. The near future science fiction series has been lauded as prophetic with some stating that it foresaw the rise of gun culture and MAGA that we see today. Butler herself stated regarding The Parable of the Talents: "“This was not a book about prophecy ... This was a cautionary tale, although people have told me it was prophecy. All I have to say to that is: I certainly hope not.”
